Workshop Project

Over the course of our 2 days together, I would like to ensure that you leave with something practical that you can use when you return to school on Monday. As you get to know the various participants in the course, and we work through the different ideas presented, you will have 3 options for your project – we will explore each idea during the workshop, and you will have time to delve deeper into your chosen topic on both Saturday and Sunday. It’s recommended that you work in groups, but you may work alone if you prefer.

Note: whichever option you select, you will share an “elevator pitch” to a small group version in our last session. This will give you a chance to present your idea for feedback, support and possible future collaboration!

1. Design a Visual

In a group, create a collection of “Presentation Zen” style slides with a quote/thought/idea from Session 1 that resonated with you and an image from Flickr (Creative Commons licensed). You can use this slide deck when you return to school to share your learning with your colleagues or admin team.

Make sure you:

2. Create a Project Pitch

In a team, use your learning from day 1 to develop a project idea that you would like to implement at school. Make sure you:

  • Highlight a key learning from the readings on Day 1.
  • Consider the backwards design process so that your project idea focuses on the enduring understandings you want students to have.
  • Can present your project idea in 3 minutes or less (an “elevator pitch”) in Sunday’s afternoon session.

3. Design a Project

  • Use the Understanding by Design process to design a technology-rich unit that transforms the learning in your classroom.
  • Share your project with the rest of the group during Sunday’s afternoon session.
  • Post your project here on the wiki so everyone can benefit.

You may want to use the Understanding by Design Unit Planner template(or your school’s curriculum planner template)to plan your unit.

4. Create an Exemplar

  • With a project you have already designed in mind, create an exemplar with a technology tool you want to explore from Session 3 or Session 5.
  • Share your exemplar with the rest of the group during Sunday’s afternoon session.
  • Post your exemplar (and accompanying project materials and rubric) here on the wiki so everyone can benefit.
